Something needs to change around here

As today's posts underscore -- variously covering Cleveland sports, Flop's unhinged musings about God, U.S. intelligence failures, Abu Ghraib and football-themed pop songs -- this blog suffers from an ongoing identity crisis.

Since its inception, I've been uncomfortable with how the posts here alternate between serious discussions about politics, descriptions of tasty fruit, and fanciful drinking games. At best it makes for an uncomfortable reading experience, at worst it demeans important topics that deserve better.

At some point in the near future, all of my posts on more timely topics will be assigned to an alternate blog, name and address TBA. This may lead to occasional organizational difficulties, but I think it's for the best, and should ease some of the Cole Slaw-related whiplash. I plan, of course, to continue posting here, but the emphasis will be more beer, fewer books.

i disagree -- i find the breadth of topics refreshing, entertaining, enlightening, and occasionally downright inspirational. you approach things with appropriate gravity and aren't flip about topics that matter. keep on keepin' on -- your audience can handle it.

agreed. it's the mix of whimsy and brainiac-geeky discourse that makes the slaw so enjoyable, much like how the bitter cabbages are made delicious by sweet carrots and mayo-based dressing.

Thank you for the kind words. But here is the dilemma -- someone comes here a couple of times and likes the funny posts, and then is hit with a lengthy foreign policy discussion and doesn't want the buzzkill. Alternatively, someone reads some serious work and then is subjected to accounts of messy drinking. Myself, I wouldn't like this in a site.

What I would do is put up a one-sentence post here linking to the affiliate blog for anyone interested.

This all remains premised on 1.) finding a site name that I like (all the good ones are taken by people who haven't posted since 2004), and 2.) making sure that I care enough to undertake the extra effort.
