Another great thing about Lost

Your head spins as you try to follow a million threads at once. Faith and fear, hope and despair, salvation and ruin. There's just so much going on. You know you're going to have to come back over this again and again and again and you can't wait.

And this shit is, technically, filed under the same heading as Two and a Half Men? Other people, lots of them, some probably even Ron Paul voters, or "independents" who think John McCain's a real maverick, they watch this. And they like it. And they probably get more of it than I give them credit for.

We can't impeach the two biggest crooks who ever ran this country because of all the mental barriers we've erected for ourselves (with help). But the mere fact that this show still exists, is still viable, means that we're not done yet. Not completely.

It's morning in America, and I'm sitting on my couch with the shades drawn, watching one more episode before I turn in.

I thought the pilot and season 1 were absolutely the best things I'd seen on network TV since Twin Peaks. However, as season 2 carried on I grew disenfranchised. The combination of ABCs ridiculous scheduling, the labyrinthine storylines, and my personal time constraints, I quit watching the show. Now I find myself wondering if that was a mistake. I've recently acquired season 2 on DVD and am considering giving it another look. I can't decide if I should rewatch the entire second season, or jump in where I left off after *** ***** was killed. I've spent more time thinking about this than appropriate; such is the nature of my fondness for the show and my own madness.
Thoughts?

Oh, hells yes you should rewatch. Season 2 works better, as most of the show does, if you can watch a couple episodes in a row. A lot of themes are being laid out and the plot slows, but I'm two episodes from the end of Season 2, which I think is where you are.

Apparently, the Season 3 payoff is substantial, and I can't wait to get there. I'm hoping to be caught up by the time the new season starts.

Which reminds me. NO SPOILERS in the comments, please.

True story: During the Capital One bowl, when I would see a Lost promo come on during a commercial, I would leave the room and go babble nonsense with my fingers in my ears so I couldn't have anything ruined. It's that important to me.

I think "Lost" works best when several episodes are watched in succession. The series gets better, deeper and more ambitious as it goes, but to work as weekly episodes they need to end like serials. When I watched in real time I sometimes felt cheated and manipulated, but watching on DVD feels very different, more like reading a long, intricate book.

I watched season 1 on Tivo in 4 sessions. I thought it was phenomenal. I got caught up on season 2 then ABC didn't air it for 8 weeks and I gave up on it.
I will give it another go.
It beats Rock of Love 2: The Strippening.

I am an EDSBS fanatic that stumbled upon this blog about a month ago and I must admit that it is one of the most unique and entertaining sites out there. I do have a question though? Flop....why the visceral hate for all things Republican? And if you say you like Huckabee or McCain they aren't Republicans. I love Lost and I'm looking forward to the 31st with bated breath. I have no idea where they are taking this but I imagine it will be amazing as usual.

Huh?

This guy must have followed JHC over from his place.

I will let Flop speak for himself, but thanks for reading and leaving the comment. I've always wondered what people who click here from EDSBS make of this site.

Speaking for myself (and NOT Flop) I personally don't hate all things Republican, just all things George W. Bush. I don't foresee myself voting Republican, but I've occasionally found the current crop refreshing (and some of them terrifying). I almost left a comment saying that the swipes at the GOP in this post were gratuitous and pointless, but I've been heckling him in the comments enough lately, and I'm also very, very excited for "Lost."

Oh, I agree. This current crop of Republicans IS refreshing! In fact, they're just so new and different from other Republicans we've seen before that it's unfair to tie them to George Bush. I mean, these guys have such bold new ideas as making Bush's tax cuts permanent (all of them but Huckabee), replacing the progressive income tax with an ultra-regressive 30% sales tax (Huckabee), starting more unnecessary wars with countries like Iran, and, let's not forget, doubling down on the current horrible failure in Iraq pretty much forever. But other than that, they're a different kind of Republican!

Remember, when the best thing one can say about a guy like John McCain is that he doesn't seem to love torture and hate Mexicans as much as the rest of them, that is really faint praise, don't you think?

But I suppose I should relate this back to Lost. Er...I always root for Jack in the Jack/Locke Man-of-Reason vs. Man-of-Faith battles because I'm a Democrat...

Gee, that comment wasn't predictable at all.

I like Jack and Locke both.

30swg: Thanks for the kind words. It's not for everyone, but for everyone who likes it, we think kindly of them.

As for my visceral hate of all things Republican, well, where to begin? Let's start with this: It's been seven years of death, disaster and embarrassment, and still there's precious few in the party who are willing to repudiate George W. Bush.

That's more than enough, isn't it? And I got there without citing a single policy difference I have with the Republican philosophy of self-interest as moral imperative, exploiting racism for electoral gain, utter disdain for the consent of the governed and rule of law, and self-delusions about the role of government in an enlightened society.

Reasonable people can disagree about some of this, but I think the continued embrace of Bush should be enough so that reasonable people should politely shut the door the next time the GOP comes peddling its shopworn, discredited wares.

LOST is defintely an interesting show in that it does seem to flow so much better when watched on DVD at your own rate. Like Crimenotes said, watching several episodes in a row definitely feels like a book and all the storylines seem to connect and give you the best of the experience. When Season 3 began so slowly last year, it was difficult to hide my disappointment, but luckily things picked up and the season finale was one of the greatest two hour experiences I've ever had watching a television show. I suspect that those watching the most recent season on DVD won't even realize how much the start of the season dragged over a 2 month period. regardless...i love this show and can't wait for Jan. 31...keep up the gr8 work guys...

:anon: I don't know what you're getting at but I happen to like my commentors very much, so MYOB.

OK, Gents, you convinced me. I went and purchased Season 3 on DVD last night (sorry writers!) and am going to make very effort to watch it so I'm ready for the 31st.

"Lost" Season 3 finale > "Sopranos" series finale. And I loved that one a lot.

See, the nice thing about getting sidetracked by those mean things I said about the GOP is that there was no danger of spoilers.

Crimenotes, you're on spoiler patrol. If one shows up, zap it.

I agree with CrimeNotes. The season 3 finale might be one of the best finales I've seen...EVER.

Spoiler:
Rosebud is his SLED.
