Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue

OK, so President Bush is going get to nominate someone to the Supreme Court, now that Sandra Day O'Connor has stepped down. I'll leave comment on her legacy and possible successors largely to my co-blogger, who loves the jurisprudence. (Punk rock, bro!)

But what does the rest of Cole Slaw Nation (as it were) think about this? I've had CNN on for less than an hour, and I'm already sick of hearing right-wing spin points about activist judges.

With apologies to Ted Striker from Airplane! (which turns 25 this weekend): When Crimenotes hears about this, the shit's going to hit the fan.

Stylin' Addendum: This week's Stylin' roundup is being pre-empted by the holiday weekend. The section is as trying and stupid as ever, and we may yet make some comment on it later this week. Until then, feel free to critique the ridiculosity yourself. And have a great weekend.

Open letter the first...

Dear Security Moms of Ohio,

Are you fucking happy now?

Love,

America

I'm kidding, of course. Crimenotes found out the same time I did. That said, there will be no shortage of shit flying about. Personally, I'm not feeling optimistic about the future of the whole social contract right now.

Open letter the second...

TO: The Honorable Robert Byrd, The Honorable Daniel Inouye, The Honorable Mary Landrieu, The Honorable Ben Nelson, The Honorable Mark Pryor, The Honorable Ken Salazar, and (especially you) The Honorable Joe Lieberman

We consider these to be "extraordinary circumstances."

Love,

America

Personally, I'm hoping for Gonzalez, the least of all the evils.

I'm hoping for Gonzalez, too.

Full rundown after the holiday weekend.

I'm going to have to agree with the Gonzalez sentiment for now.
(Although Crapo's a great idea, for the reason bloguita said ... do you suppose other senators giggle at that?)

As far as Gonzalez goes, I don't think we'll be getting him. When confronted with sensible moderation or spaz-out extremism, Bush has chosen the latter almost every time.

Question for the savvy among us: Wouldn't Janice Rogers Brown totally have a free pass if they wanted to nominate her?

Or is it the fight they want?

I've got a theory about why he'll nominate Gonzalez, but I'll write it up once the holiday weekend is over.

No way that Janice Rogers Brown would have a free pass. Not even close. Why do you think that?

Some of them want a fight; a lot of them don't.

Man, I just looked at some of my favorite left-wing blogs and everybody is flipping the fuck out. Way premature ... I wish everybody would wait until he names someone and in the interim channel their intensity into fighting back against Rove's 9/11 comments. Because right now, the Democrats are acting as spazzy and paranoid as the Republicans.

Wasn't Janice one of the judges that the seven democrats agreed not to filibuster for an appellate court seat? I know it's a big difference to you and I, but I feel like in the spin war, that's not an important distinction at all. Any attempt to stop her would be met with indignant outrage ... of course, any time a Democrat opens his or her mouth it's met with indignant outrage.

Also: I'm starting to think that James Dobson is going to pick this nominee, anyway. Or maybe the dumbass who said Sandra Day O'Connor wreaked more havoc than any foreign enemies.

I'm not nearly so pessimistic. On a more important note, I just sheparded some Michiganders out of Motor City Bar, where, yet again, they were out of Vernor's and Stroh's. I blame Libation.
