If you can't say something nice ...

Everyone in New York is always bitching about the subway system. And there's plenty of grievances: The crappy condition of the stations, the capricious weekend service, the indifference of some of the booth attendants, and the utter malign neglect of the MTA itself.

But I would like to say this: The uptown platform of the 6 train at 23rd St smells wonderful. I'm serious, it's like fabric softener and soap or perfume something. It almost makes me want to linger on the platform and drink in the incongruity of such a filthy platform smelling like a freshman girl's dorm room in which you're about to hook up for the first time.

I'd totally pay the fare hike if they could make them all smell like this, and eliminate the usual miasma of bum pee and brake dust.

Interesting. I've noticed that the downtown 4/5 platform at 59th St smeels stale god-awful.

I'm surprised, though, that people have complaints about mass transit in NYC. Compared to any other city in the U.S., the subways/buses here are terrific. It's almost like we're in Europe.

Nah. I think we probably beat London and Paris, but I imagine all the German and Austrian cities have us beat. I can only speak for Vienna and Munich, but yeah _ they win.
